The annual multifaith arts devotional, 21 September 2019,\nhosted by the Hindu Parishad and Cultural Centre and co-sponsored by VMS, was\nagain a fantastic success: full to the brim and then some! The colour, warmth\nand hospitality of the Hindu community shone through the space. Spirits were\nhigh as presenters from a multitude of traditions all sang praises in many\nforms, languages and voices to the one God, as MC Sri Ganti noted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nicole Mandryk<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Led by Sudhakar Ganti, the sacred sound of Om filled the\nroom to open the evening. First Nations presenter Nicole Mandryk told a\nmagnificent story of northern resident killer whales, with song, drum and\ndancers. Fiona Stuart of the Jewish community involved the whole audience with\nthe song Hallelu<\/em>.Tahirih Nasseri, a young Bah\u00e1\u2019\u00ed, presented the song\n\u201cFind Me\u201d, based on the writings of Bah\u00e1\u2019u\u2019ll\u00e1h. Rev. Karen Verveda, Diego\nBarrientos and Kathryn Lacerte of the United Church led the audience in two\nselections, one in the Taize tradition. People continued to pour in, sitting on\nthe floor, or on seats that instantly showed up when needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

T\u00e2m (Phil Rossner), presented The Boddisattva of\nCompassion<\/em>, with audience assistance. VMS board member Yavhel Valasquez\nsang a moving song compilation called The River<\/em>. Vinod Bhardwaj and Anil\nKapoor, accompanied by Suresh Basrur, sang and drummed Sikh, Hindu and Muslim\nsongs. Several participants spontaneously offered songs and prayers, one a\nsmall Jain girl who recited the names of the 24 tirthankaras without\nhesitation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The delicious southeast Asian meal was prepared by several\nfamilies, also a multifaith effort from preparation to clean up, with many men\nand women in the kitchen. Over 100 people were served, all through the\ngenerosity of volunteers who worked hard, with enthusiasm and joy, to provide\nthis great community-building event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
